Mark and Stacy Go to Hawaii! To Homepage

Last January we went to Hawaii! We spent two days on the North Shore of Oahu and then thirteen days on the big island of Hawaii itself. We got to snorkle in tropical reefs with real coral. We got to walk through tropical jungle (and get bitten by tropical mosquitos), through lava tubes, and on land only a few years old. We even barely missed getting snowed in!

This is the route we drove around the big island. We started and finished in Hilo, travelling counter clockwise around the island. We spent four nights (at two different occasions) at Kilauea Crator, three nights in Hilo, one at the bottom of Waipio Valley (May Pele smile on old Tom Araki!), and three nights in Kona.

Turtle Picture

Snorkeling in the tropics is the greatest! We got to swim next to a turtle. I could have easily have reached out and touched it (Mark). I tried to take pictures of each type of fish we saw, but I quickly ran out of film. In Kona they swarmed around us looking for handouts. Some were quite big with large teeth.

Unlike Oahu, Hawaii is a new island so there is not a lot of coral. The water is clear and blue with lots of fish, once you get away from the cool brackish water near shore.
